So we went to the zoo on Saturday. We were all excited to go. We had heard great things about the zoo. It is huge. There really isn’t any way to get through the whole thing in a day. It is as big as Disney Land. There are koalas, pandas, penguins, kangaroos, etc… It is really cheap too. I think it was less than $5 per person. We decided to take a gondola ride before going to the zoo. We soon realized we should have saved it for another day, because at every stop on the gondola there were things to go explore. We didn’t go on any side trips. Our priority was the zoo. Off the gondola, strait back to the zoo.
A few minutes into our zoo experience we had people asking if they could take pictures of the children. I assumed the kids were sick of posing for the camera, so I wasn’t extremely pleased. I put on a fake smile and said sure. This happened more times than I’d like to remember. At one point we were eating lunch surrounded by approximately 12 people wanting to take photos of us. I began to feel claustrophobic and wanted to escape. I managed to keep the fake smile and act gracious. We really just wanted to go to the zoo. I didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. I don’t know if I’ll ever fully understand why so many Asian people wanted to take photos of us. I do know that we were the only people with blond hair at the zoo, and trust me, there were a lot of people there. I was worried about the kids. I told them they could tell people not to take their picture. Tommy told me he didn’t mind. With a big grin on his face he said “I’m popular here”. I reminded him that he is just an ordinary kid back in the states. I think he tried to ignore me. Hopefully I can keep him and his sister grounded!!
The zoo was cool, but I have to admit I couldn’t fully enjoy it because we were ‘Exhibit B”. We should have been on the list of animals…koalas, bears, kangaroos, blond Americans, lizards, alligators
. Emmett tried to calm me down about the whole thing. I think I should have heeded my mom’s warning about this. She was right. I should have bought a black wig to wear in public. Maybe I will…
